![]() Hello everyone and welcome to New York as we get set to tip off Game 1 in the Eastern Conference playoffs from Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will have to respond in in Game 2 on Wednesday night, while the Hawks have a chance to return to Atlanta up 2-0. Game 1 showed that there is not much between these two teams. This series looks like it has the potential to go the distance. Despite the bench scoring 64 points it wasn’t enough to hold off Young. Alec Burks had 27 points off the bench, and Derrick Rose had 17. The Knicks starters never got going, and they depended on their bench to keep them in the game late. Bogdan Bogdanovic came through late in the game with some timely buckets, on his way to 18 points. It was the dream playoff debut for Young who finished with 32 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists. There were six lead changes in the final four minutes of the game, the last one being Young’s floater down the baseline with 0.9 seconds left on the clock. The Knicks got a nearly packed Madison Square Garden back on their side after a 15-3 third quarter run put New York in front going into the fourth quarter. The visitors sprung out to an early double digit lead in the first quarter and kept the Kicks at a distance until the final minutes of the half. The Hawks led for more than the lions share of the evening. In his career first playoff game, Trey Young took charge in the fourth quarter, and hit the game winner with under a second left on the clock to take Game 1 from the Knicks. Hawks make triumphant return to the playoffsīoth teams were making their first playoff appearance in a number of years, but it was the Hawks, who hadn’t played a post season game since 2017, who showed the poise deep in the fourth quarter. Trey Young hit the late winner and stole home court advantage from the Knicks with a 107-105 victory. Barrett, pretty clearly, is the future of the New York Knicks and he’s just getting started. The Atlanta Hawks held on late to take a thrilling Game 1 victory at Madison Square Garden. Julius Randle was vastly improved his sixth season but in the playoffs his limitations showed. The only other guys who have done that are Kobe, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic. The third pick behind Williamson and Ja Morant, Barrett seemed like something of a consolation prize, and an uneven season reinforced that perception.īut Barrett did something pretty unusual by his vastly improved second season: he racked up more than 2,000 points, pulled down 500 rebounds and passed out 300 assists before turning 21. In his rookie season, which was weird for every rookie, Barrett took a lot of criticism, partly because of comparisons with Williamson, who the Knicks really, really wanted. In one, Barrett is celebrating a massive Williamson dunk in the other, Williamson is about four feet off the ground as Barrett slams one home. ![]() There is a great pair of photos of the two. And actually that’s the wrong word: they thrived as teammates.īarrett has clearly shown an alpha personality on the court and did so at Duke despite Williamson’s vast physical superiority.īut partly because Williamson was willing to defer to Barrett, at one point calling Duke “RJ’s team” and allowing him to express his instincts and partly because the two struck up a genuine mutual admiration society, there was never a hint of tension or jealousy between the two. ![]() ![]() One of the great understated accomplishments of Duke’s 2018-19 team was just how smoothly RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson co-existed.
